The Benefits of teaching your dog to wear a muzzle
In my opinion, muzzle training is an invaluable skill that every dog should learn. A properly introduced muzzle can be a tool of empowerment, safety, and freedom for both you, and your beloved canine companion.
What are some reasons a dog may need to wear a muzzle?
Emergency Veterinary Care
Even the gentlest, most well-behaved dog can snap or bite when they’re frightened, in pain, or being examined by a veterinarian.
A dog who is already comfortable wearing a muzzle will be significantly less stress during emergency situations when a muzzle might be required.
Instead of adding the trauma of a hastily applied, unfamiliar restraint device, your dog simply wears something they already know, and accept.
Preventing Scavenging
Does your dog have a habit of hoovering up everything on walks? Scavenging for anything remotely edible, or not? Discarded food to potentially dangerous items? Chewing on sticks can also be dangerous.
A basket muzzle allows your dog to pant, drink, and receive treats, whilst preventing them from eating harmful objects. This can be life-saving for dogs who have ingested foreign objects or toxic substances. Especially if they have ventured out of sight, temporarily.
Grooming and Medical Procedures
Nail trimming, ear cleaning, and other grooming tasks can be stressful for many dogs. A muzzle-trained dog gives groomers, and veterinary staff the confidence to work safely.
This results in calmer handling, and a better experience overall for your dog.

For dogs who are fearful or reactive, a muzzle can actually provide freedom. When you know your dog cannot bite, you can relax, and dogs are incredibly perceptive to our tension.
Your increased confidence can help your dog feel more secure. Furthermore, a muzzle allows you to safely practice behaviour modification exercises, and gradually expose your dog to triggers at a comfortable distance.
It can act as a deterrent and cause others to give you space. This is no bad thing!
Prevents Play from Escalating
For some dogs, play can become too overstimulating, and tip into problematic behaviour. A basket muzzle can act as a helpful management tool by preventing dogs from using their mouths inappropriately during play.
This can be particularly useful for dogs who tend to get “mouthy” when excited, play too rough, or struggle to disengage when arousal levels get high.
Many dogs play in a calmer fashion when muzzled. Because they cannot rely on their mouths, they’re encouraged to use their bodies differently and often develop better play manners.
The muzzle can serve as a physical reminder to engage in more appropriate play behaviours, helping dogs who might otherwise get overexcited, overwhelm the other dog, or tip into aggression.
For dogs who are learning to play nicely with others or who have a history of play sessions breaking down, muzzle training can provide a critical safety net. It can allow them to continue socialising whilst you work on building better self management, and play skills.
